Chapter 1: Colombus and the Indians

For this unit you will be reading Chapter 1 from the Zinn book. Some of the topics that will be covered are: The Arawaks’ Impossible Task, Telling Columbus’s Story and the many different interactions between people and the fighting that resulted. The purpose of this chapter is to expose the misconceptions about Columbus, and introduce the actual facts.

Chapter 2: Black and White

For this unit you will read Chapter 2 from the Zinn book. You will lean more about the slave trade and it related history, such as The Terrible Transformation and the Middle Passage.

Chapter 3: Who Were the Colonists?

For this unit you will read Chapter 3 from the Zinn book. The topics covered by the following readings will give you a clearer picture of the people who originally arrived in what would be the United States and their intentions.

Chapter 4: Tyranny is Tyranny

For this unit you will read pgs. 53-61, Anger & Violence and Revolution in the Air from the Zinn book. The following information is on key people that were involved in the Boston Massacre. There is also information on the idea of patriotism and the ways it was viewed in the past and now in the present. Issues such as anger and violence will also be discussed.

Chapter 5: Revolutions

For this unit you will read Chapter 5 from the Zinn book. In the assignments below there are specific pages assigned to the readings so please look for what you need to read with each article. The topics covered in this section include: war, mutiny, the struggle of minorities and women in the revolutions. The Mexican War of Independence and voting rights will also be covered.

Chapter 6: The Women of Early America

For this unit you will read Chapter 6 from the Zinn book. This section of the course is meant to explore the role that women played in the creation of the United States. So far, the contributions they made have been ignored, these readings are meant to bring them to your attention.

Chapter 7: As Long As Grass Grows and Water Runs

For this chapter you will draw connections from Native American History as Zinn covers From Indian Fighter to President. Read Chapter 7 in the Zinn book. By looking at the role that various presidents have played in the genocide of Native Americans in particular president Andrew Jackson. Further exploring The Terrible Choice of the U.S. imperialistic expansion through manifest destiny. By looking at the way in which Native Americans are marginalized, pushed away and killed to be removed from their land. We lastly conclude by looking at the forms of resistance that was taken up by Native Americans in Fighting for Freedom.

Chapter 8: War with Mexico

For this unit you will be reading Chapter Eight in the Zinn book. Topics include manifest destiny, the Mexican War, expansion and the victory of the United States over Mexico.

Chapter 9: Slavery and Emancipation

For this unit you will read Chapter 9 from the Zinn book. You will learn about slavery in the Southern United States, The Abolition Movement, and the Civil War in relationship to slavery.

Chapter 10: The Other Civil War

For this unit you will read Chapter 10 of the Zinn book. The main focus of this section is to examine how life for people during this time was a type of war, fighting against poverty and the rule of the super rich and elite.

Chapter 11: Robber Barons and Rebels

For this unit you will read Chapter 11 from the Zinn book. The main themes include railroad barons and how they exploited others, especially the Chinese.

Chapter 12: The American Empire

For this unit you will be reading Chapter 12 from the Zinn book. Topics include:The Spanish American War, Cuba and the Philippine History

Look out for issues that are relevant to things that are happening today. Topics today: Cuba, other US military interventions. Venezuela.

Chapter 1 (Book 2): Class Struggle

Please Read Chapter 1 of Book 2, "Class Struggle". This chapter discusses the rising favor of socialism in the early 20th century, as well as the labor struggles of the early 1900's.

Chapter 2 (Book 2): World War One

For this chapter we will focus on the Intiation of World War I. The Nations of Europe who went to war and the progessive U.S. involvement in the War. By looking at how the U.S. initially participated in the war by taking Blood and Money. We will further explore The Radical response of citizens because of the Espionage Act and the involvement of the Socialist Party. Lastly by understanding the consequences After the Fighting and the new position the U.S. took up.
